If we want to look at our original image in high-resolution, we can do that too. As with thumbnails, we can customize the size of the image by dragging a slider. You’ll also notice that when we drag a slider to adjust the thumbnail size, the entire thumbnail is affected. Dragging a slider isn’t limited to just thumbnails. Bridge will even display a larger image preview when we double-click on an image.

Before we can view all of our images in such detail, Bridge needs to have a good directory structure. Bridge won’t sort our images by year, month or any other creative choice until we create a custom sort. That’s because Bridge can display files only in the order that they were last opened in. But we don’t want our folders organized in chronological order. We want our folder structure to reflect our creative thinking. So it’s in this tutorial that we’ll learn how to create custom sort orders in Bridge.

If we click in the lower left corner of a folder, Bridge will usually create a new folder named Year. For example, if we click in the lower left corner of the folder called November, Bridge will create a new folder named Year. In that case, we can create a new Year sort order in Bridge by simply dragging a folder from the main Bridge window to the new folder named Year (or any other folder).

You may notice that the previously-mentioned steps are all under the New heading. This isn’t a bug. The reason is simple: Bridge was designed to work this way. Bridge has a lot of great features, but we’re starting to run out of space (and time) to show you all of them. That’s why I’ll be focusing on the more advanced features in this tutorial.

If you’re using Photoshop CS6, you might be wondering how you can create and then place a Brush Selection using Adobe Bridge. The answer is not as easy as it might seem. You can’t place a Brush Selection directly using Bridge. You must first load the Brush Selection feature from Camera Raw. But to do that, you need to Open the image in Camera Raw first. So when you need to create a Brush Selection, first open the image in Photoshop, then open Camera Raw, select Brush Selection…, and then use the Lasso or Polygonal Lasso to create your selection.

Bridge can also store Photoshop actions. Unlike brushes, actions can use Photoshop’s image-editing commands directly, whether those commands are in Photoshop or in an external application. And you can have multiple layers of actions in Bridge. However, the file size of Photoshop actions is quite large, so we recommend you store them on an external hard drive.

In Bridge, you can do all this in just a few clicks, from opening the Image > Info > Camera data panel. Here you can:

  • See the settings you used to take the photo. For instance, if you took the image with a certain lens, you’ll see the focal length.
  • See if the image is in landscape or portrait orientation
  • See if the image is in a certain orientation
  • Change the orientation of the image in Bridge
  • Change the orientation of the image in Photoshop

What is Adobe Bridge and what is it for

While the Folders panel is great for finding your images, the Content panel may be better for previewing them. Images in Bridge are displayed in a grid-like format. You have the option to display all images in the grid, just thumbnails of those images, or just the filename and date added to the image.

In Photoshop, the Preview panel is where you view and manipulate your images. In Bridge, the Preview panel contains the thumbnails for each image you have added to a collection. You can zoom, rotate, crop and reduce noise your images in the Preview panel. You can always send the image you’re working on for a final print by clicking the Print button in the Print area.

Bridge makes it even easier to take and organize your photos. It can group photos into collections, which makes it easy to find related images. Collections can be dynamic, too. In the next tutorial, we’re going to learn how to add a collection to a folder in Windows Explorer.

In Bridge’s main window, we have a tool panel on the left side. Above that, we have the Project Browser. The Project Browser lets us see all of our original files along with all the versions of those files (if we have them). We can also create a new folder in there to better organize the photos we’ve downloaded from our camera.

To get started, we want to make sure we have the newest version of Bridge. We can find that at http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/mmform/index.cfm?adType=box&product_id=527 . Once you’re there, just click the Change button on the right. Then select Install.
